The Pricing LetterNo. 142

The case for boring growth

Every founder I talk to wants a growth spike. The writers who last are the ones who stopped chasing them. Here's what three years of slow, compounding months taught me about pricing, churn and

Behind the paywall: 141 more posts

Lenny's Newsletter and MKT1 built this for their own paid subscribers. Ask Your Archive gives it to every newsletter.

Years of writing, earning again.

New money from free readers

Most of your list will never pay for the full subscription. AI access is a cheaper way in: a few dollars a month to ask your archive anything. You set the price, and it goes to your Stripe.

A reason to stay paid

Paid subscribers get years of your thinking on tap, on your site or in their own Claude. Cancelling means losing it.

Know what to write next

A weekly report shows what readers ask about most, where free readers hit your paywall, and what your archive doesn't answer yet.

Readers ask. Your archive answers.

A reader types a question, the way they would in ChatGPT. Ask Your Archive finds the posts where you covered it and writes a short answer in your words, linking every source.

Example · The Pricing Letter
1

How should I price my first B2B product?

2

Start from the value to the buyer, not your costs: anchor on what the problem costs them today1. Launch higher than feels comfortable, since raising prices later is harder than offering a discount2.

1

The reader's question

Typed on your archive page, or asked in their own Claude.

2

An answer in your words

Written only from what you've published, never a persona.

3

Every claim cited

Each number points to the exact post it came from.

4

Traffic back to you

Sources link to your originals, so readers land on your site.

5

Your new revenue line

Free readers buy AI access. You set the price; Ask Your Archive keeps 10%.

How it works

1

Paste your newsletter's address

In about a minute you get a private preview: your public posts answering real questions, with citations.

2

Claim it and add your paid posts

Prove it's yours with your beehiiv API key or Substack export. Paid subscribers get the whole archive, included in what they already pay.

3

Sell AI access to everyone else

Free readers who won't take the full subscription can buy AI access from you. You set the price, payments go to your own Stripe.

Pricing

Priced by your paid subscriber count. Keeping two or three paid readers who'd otherwise cancel covers Starter. On AI access you sell, Ask Your Archive keeps 10% and the rest goes straight to your Stripe.

Your work stays yours

Your archive belongs to you, and protecting it matters to us as much as it does to you.

  • You keep every right to your writing.

Connecting Ask Your Archive only lets us show excerpts of your posts to the readers you allow. You can revoke that whenever you want.

  • We never train AI on your writing.

  • Paid stays paid.

Paid posts only reach readers who pay you, through your subscription or AI access you sell.

  • Every answer points back to you.

Readers get short quotes with links to your original posts. Only readers who already pay you can open a whole post.

  • Delete means delete.

Remove your archive and we erase it, including search data, within 30 days.

  • Only you can claim your newsletter.

Anyone can preview a newsletter's public posts, but that preview stays private to them, disappears after 7 days, and can only become an account if the owner proves it's theirs. Prefer no previews at all? Tell us and we'll block your newsletter from them.

Questions

Who can read paid posts?

Only readers whose email is on your paid subscriber list. Access is checked on every question, and cancelled subscribers lose paid posts at the next sync.

Won't this give my newsletter away?

Readers get excerpts with links back to you, not a copy of your archive. You can hold back your newest posts for as many days as you like, so the inbox stays the first place to read them.

Do free readers get anything?

A small sample you choose, plus the titles of paid posts that match their question and your upgrade link. It's a reason to upgrade, not a free pass.

What about readers' own AI apps?

Readers who use your archive in their own Claude are covered by their own settings, the same as when a reader pastes a post into a chat. We never train AI on your writing.

Where can readers ask?

On your archive page (no setup, anyone can try it), or in their own Claude on every plan, including free.

How does AI access get paid?

Readers buy it from you on your archive page with Stripe. The money goes to your own Stripe account; Ask Your Archive keeps a 10% fee. Refunds and cancellations remove access automatically.

What do I see?

A weekly Reader Demand Report: how many readers use it, the topics they ask about most, where free readers hit paid posts, and what your archive doesn't cover yet.

What do readers' questions reveal?

Only anonymous topics that 5 or more readers asked about, with reworded examples. Never names, emails or exact questions, and readers can opt out.
